Where the endless red of the Great Sandy Desert collides with the crystalline blue of the Indian Ocean, there runs a 23-kilometre arc of dazzling white. This is Cable Beach, at the edge of the Kimberley, and it is the setting for one of the world’s truly original creations.
Cable Beach Club is like nothing else. Its architecture is a wondrous mix of tropical Kimberley house and grand Chinese pavilion. Its 26 acres of gardens grow pandanus palms beside gum trees, water lilies beside frangipani. And, most remarkably, it is dotted, inside and out, with an astounding collection of artworks and antiquities that set an exotic, colonial tone to the entire resort.
The award-winning architecture takes the classic Broome lattice - so beloved in these parts for its ability to block the sun but not the breeze - and gives it a courageous coat of Chinese red, It adds a touch of the green from the hulls of Broome’s old pearling luggers, and finally some outback corrugated iron, given a twist of cream. The roof lines display just a hint of pagoda.
The warm air, always suffused with the many perfumes of the tropical gardens, also carries the earthy fragrance of the beeswax and frangipani rubbed on the rich timber walkways. It is a heady, romantic blend.
In the rooms, along the decks, and throughout the gardens, rare treasures await discovery. The bluestone Chinese lions, the Indian princess’s huge, copper-faced dowry chest, the teak display cabinet from the days of the Dutch East India Company, the replica terracotta warriors standing guard at the front door.
This can only be the Cable Beach Club.
