Launceston Information

Launceston is Tasmania’s second-largest city and is located on the Tamar River where the North and South Esk Rivers converge - a city of graceful streets adorned by elegant Victorian and Edwardian facades, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Launceston is an attractive city due to its many parks and gardens, which incorporate European trees such as oaks and elms.

Self-guided walking tours present an excellent opportunity to see the cultural and historic attractions that Launceston has to offer.

Cataract Gorge Reserve is arguably the best recreational area in the northern city of Launceston, located only 1.6 km (1 mi) from the city centre. The chairlift crossing the Gorge is the longest single span one in the world at 308m (924 ft) or you can opt for the suspension bridge, pausing in the middle to watch the rapids far below.

City Park has a monkey island and the John Hart Conservatory.

The Launceston Country Club Casino, Tasmania's second casino, is on the city outskirts.

Launceston Airport is located approximately 30 minutes drive south of the city.
