Cape Don is the site of a historic lighthouse built in 1916 which is still in operation today.
Cape Don is situated on the most north west tip of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory and is the most western point of Gurig National Park (which encompasses the Cobourg Peninsula, and the surrounding waters in Cobourg Marine Park).
The only access is by light aircraft landing at the Cape Don all weather airstrip. Our package tours incorporate the air transfer from Darwin return in comfortable aircraft taking approximately 45 minutes, flying over some of Australia's most spectacular coastal areas.
Remote Cape Don is the site of a historic lighthouse built in 1916 which is still in operation today.
Cobourg Peninsula has the reputation of being one of the best fishing locations in Australia. Jutting from the Northern Territory's north coast and covering a total area of 450,000 hectares, the Gurig National Park and the Cobourg Marine Park are managed jointly by the local Aboriginal custodians and the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory through the Cobourg Peninsula Sanctuary and Marine Park Board.
The salty creek systems contain Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, threadfin salmon and the awesome estuarine Crocodile, the largest reptile in the world. Dolphins, giant turtles and the endangered Dugong all reside in the seas surrounding Cobourg Peninsula. In the open waters swim the pelagic fish so sought after by game fisherman, marlin, Sailfish, Mackerel, Northern Blue Tuna and the like.
For the non-angler Cape Don offers spectacular scenery in unspoiled areas where only a few people have ventured. The creeks and surrounding coastline offer a myriad of bird species and marine life.
Private picnic lunches on a sandy island, exploring endless sandy beaches for turtle nests and crocodile slides, hunting for the giant mud crabs with a locally made Aboriginal spear, are all possible activities for the adventurer who is fortunate enough to stay at Cape Don.
Guests can visit with their guide, a monsoonal rainforest only meters from white sandy beaches and explore a unique coral reef system within a spectacular mangrove lined creek - an ideal area for the bird enthusiast.
