This much travelled example of early Australian architecture, once the Brigidine Convent in Coonamble, is now settled amongst magnificent gardens adjoining the Pepper Tree Vineyard. From its spacious suites and verandahs you can cast your eyes over the swimming pool, tennis court, winery and tasting barn. We brought it 600km to offer you the serene history of a building unlike anything you've experienced.

A straight drive lined with liquid amber leads to the Convent. Inside its lounges and guest rooms have been decorated in sympathy with its simple outback heritage. It's convenient base for the most varied of activities. And each extraordinary day concludes superbly with a meal at Roberts or at Chez Pok in the nearby peppers Guest House.

The much awarded Robert's Restaurant, including the 1978 National Trust listed Pepper Tree Cottage, has been described as the Hunter Valley's most beautiful dining room. Its cuisine and ambience are legendary. Some say the secret is in the magnificent wood fired oven. Whatever the reason, the food is fabulous and the wine list just as impressive. GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN

One of the delights of visiting the Hunter Valley is that whatever way you arrive, the beauty of the region is always on show. Consider a limousine or helicopter from Sydney or Newcastle ? we can arrange it for you. Most guests enjoy the easy 2-hour drive from Sydney on the F3 including the scenic drive after leaving the F3 ? through rolling hills and vineyards. We?re easy to find; just ask us to fax or mail you a map when confirming bookings. There?s also the seaplane from Rose Bay to Newcastle that features marvelous coastal views. A scheduled airline service flies between Sydney and Maitland, which is nearby. For those last two options, transfers can be arranged on your behalf.

The Retreat features an on site swimming pool, heated spa pavilion, tennis court, boules, bicycles and, to assist in recovering from all this activity, relaxing massage facilities.
